Why I Work With Argentium Silver

Why I Work With Argentium Silver

What Is Argentium Silver?

Argentium silver is a modern silver alloy developed as an alternative to traditional sterling silver. It contains a small addition of germanium, which improves durability and resistance to tarnish. This makes it particularly appealing for contemporary jewellery makers who want to combine traditional materials with modern design.

Argentium vs Sterling Silver

Traditional sterling silver contains copper, which can lead to quicker tarnishing. Argentium silver behaves differently. The germanium content forms a protective layer on the surface, slowing the tarnishing process and making the metal easier to maintain. For wearers, this means jewellery that retains its bright appearance longer.

Fusing Instead of Soldering

One of the technical advantages of Argentium silver is that it can often be fused rather than soldered. Fusing allows metal surfaces to join directly, creating seamless connections. This process suits my ShipShape chain designs, where links are fused closed to form strong, continuous structures. It also leaves subtle traces of the making process, which I enjoy as part of the visual language of the jewellery.

Oxidation and Surface Texture

Argentium silver also responds beautifully to oxidation. When darkened, the metal produces rich contrasts between light and shadow. These surfaces echo the industrial aesthetic of maritime equipment, making the material particularly suitable for the ShipShape collection.

Why It Suits Sculptural Jewellery

Because Argentium silver is both durable and versatile, it supports sculptural forms that require both strength and elegance. For jewellery that moves, links, or interacts with the body, the material provides the reliability needed for everyday wear.
