ShipShape Collection - The Story

The ShipShape Collection explores the relationship between humans and the sea as a powerful force and a vital route for transport. Inspired by ships, anchor chains, and cargo moving across ocean waves, these sculptural pieces translate maritime engineering into contemporary jewellery.

Handmade in Dublin, the collection combines gemstones, kinetic elements, and traditional goldsmithing techniques to create jewellery that moves with the wearer.

The collection includes two series: ShipShape Kinetic, featuring sliding gemstone elements inspired by cargo shifting in rough seas, and ShipShape Chain, bold chain designs referencing the heavy anchor chains used in shipping.

ShipShape Chain

Inspired by the heavy anchor chains used in the shipping industry, the ShipShape Chain series translates the raw strength of maritime engineering into sculptural jewellery.

Chunky links in oxidised Argentium silver reference industrial chains weathered by sea and time. Rather than hiding the making process, the pieces often retain subtle traces of their construction, such as fused joins that echo the rugged character of welded chains. Each chain is completed with three solid 18k gold links, creating a striking contrast between industrial silver and precious metal. The result is jewellery that feels both bold and refined.

Despite their sculptural appearance, the chains are surprisingly lightweight and flexible, making them comfortable for everyday wear. Handmade C-clasps allow multiple chains or bracelets to be linked together seamlessly, enabling the wearer to experiment with different lengths and compositions.

ShipShape Kinetic

The ShipShape Kinetic series reflects the powerful motion of the ocean and the unpredictable journey of cargo across the seas. Inspired by the idea of barrels rolling below deck or containers shifting in heavy storms, these pieces feature sliding gemstone elements that move gently within their settings. The motion echoes the rhythm of waves and creates a subtle tactile experience for the wearer.

Construction techniques reference traditional shipbuilding methods, particularly rivets, which provide both structural strength and visual rhythm within the designs. Soft blue and green gemstones reflect the shifting colours of the ocean, while oxidised silver versions offer a darker, more industrial expression. As the gemstones move within their cages they produce a quiet metallic sound — reminiscent of halyards tapping against masts in a harbour — an accidental but calming feature that makes these pieces subtly interactive.

Sculptural Maritime Jewellery

The ShipShape collection explores maritime engineering through sculptural contemporary jewellery. Inspired by ships, anchor chains, and cargo moving across powerful ocean waves, these pieces translate the language of industry and transport into wearable form. Each piece is handmade in Dublin using traditional goldsmithing techniques and carefully selected gemstones.

Kinetic Jewellery Inspired by Ocean Movement

Several pieces in the ShipShape collection incorporate kinetic elements that allow gemstones to slide within their settings. This movement reflects the motion of cargo shifting across a ship’s deck in heavy seas. The gentle sliding motion creates a tactile interaction between jewellery and wearer, making each piece subtly responsive and alive.

Handmade Contemporary Jewellery in Dublin

All ShipShape pieces are handcrafted in Nicole van der Wolf’s Dublin studio using traditional goldsmithing techniques such as fusing, riveting, and lost-wax casting. By working directly with precious metals and gemstones, Nicole maintains a close connection to the materials and ensures that each piece carries its own unique character.
