How Kinetic Jewellery Works: Movement in Contemporary Jewellery
What Is Kinetic Jewellery?
Kinetic jewellery incorporates movement as part of its design. Unlike static pieces, these works change position or respond to motion when worn. This movement can be subtle: rotating elements, sliding stones, or articulated links that shift with the body. The result is jewellery that invites interaction and reveals new details as it moves. For many contemporary jewellery artists, movement adds a dimension to the relationship between jewellery and its wearer.
A Brief History of Movement in Jewellery
Movement has appeared in jewellery for centuries. Hinged pendants, articulated necklaces, and mechanical automata in historical jewellery all show that jewellers have long experimented with motion. In contemporary jewellery, kinetic elements often serve a conceptual purpose, exploring themes of interaction, play, and the relationship between object and wearer.
Engineering Challenges in Kinetic Jewellery
Designing moving jewellery is not simply a matter of aesthetics. Movement introduces practical challenges. Pieces must remain durable, comfortable to wear, and resistant to wear over time. Small tolerances are required so that components move freely without becoming loose. These challenges make kinetic jewellery both an artistic and technical exercise.
Sliding Gemstones and Structural Design
In my ShipShape Kinetic pieces, gemstones slide within carefully constructed containers. The design references cargo shifting in turbulent seas. Riveted structures allow the stone to travel from side to side while remaining securely enclosed. The result is a subtle motion accompanied by a soft sound as the stone reaches the edge of its frame.
Tactile Jewellery
Kinetic jewellery often appeals to people who enjoy tactile interaction with objects. The gentle movement of elements can be calming, providing something to focus on during busy moments. This quality is sometimes described as “tactile jewellery”—pieces designed not only to be seen but also to be handled and experienced.
