How I made my Coral Reef Necklace - From Concept to Finished Piece

Jewellery rarely begins as something recognisable.

More often, it starts as fragments — small decisions, experiments, moments of curiosity that slowly take shape.

These pieces began like that too.

From Idea to Form

These pieces are rooted in memory: time spent in the Caribbean as a child, snorkelling over shallow reefs.

What stayed with me was the magic of the layered structures of the corals and natural sponges, small pockets of space, and the patterns of sunlight filtering through water.

The three coral reef necklaces in this series — Aqua Jasper, Terra Jasper, and Deep Sea Coral — aim to capture that sense of depth and filtered light, something between structure and fluidity.

The soft matte finish and decorative off-set holes in the surface are a nod to the little polyps that build these beautiful and delicate natural structures.

The Making Process

The process begins with the clasp — the structural core of the piece.

I hand-constructed the original clasp as a master pattern, ensuring the key and opening align precisely. The position of the opening is critical for ease of operation and security of the clasp. With an additional twist required to open it, the clasp won't open unintentionally.

The final pieces are cast in either silver or 9 karat gold. After casting, I complete all final stages by hand: construction, assembly, and finishing.

These stages of making are often hidden in finished jewellery, but they’re where the character of the piece is formed.

Each mark, each join, each decision becomes part of the final structure.

Jewellery as Process

For me, making is not separate from design — it is the design.

The process shapes the outcome just as much as the initial idea.

This is especially true in pieces like the Coral Reef necklaces, where form isn’t imposed, but discovered.

Final Thoughts

Jewellery holds more than its final form.

It carries the process behind it — the time, the material, the small decisions that build into something whole.

And while much of that disappears into the finished piece, it’s always there, just beneath the surface
